South American funk injects modern influences

One of the handful of Latin or Latin-influenced groups making big waves this year at Fuji Rock are Frente Cumbiero.

What set them apart is that unlike the other groups (who are equally as impressive by the way) they veer away from traditional structures and arrangements of latin music and incorporate synths and electronic elements into their sound.

For what sounds on paper like a dangerous recipe that could fall into lame territory without the right ingredients, this modern youthful take on the genre adds a lot of depth to the energetic Latin base, and Frente Cumbiero pull it off very well.

They had Crystal Palace tent crowds rockin’ and groovin’ along deep into the night.
