LIVE REPORTWHITE STAGE7/29 FRI
This time, Bonobo brings a memorable visual experience to stage
Bonobo returns to Fuji Rock once again to perform on the White Stage. Simon Green himself said during Friday’s set how great it is to be back in Japan.
The Los Angeles based British producer brought on his crew consisting of brass (trombone, trumpet, saxophone), drums, and synthesizer, as well as singer Nicole Miglis (vocalist for Hundred Waters) onto stage for a one and a half hour set late in the evening.
Paired with experimental visual scenes of nature, Bonobo played through his newest and seventh album, “Fragments” released earlier this year, while sprinkling in crowd hits such as “Kerala”. Last time he performed at Fuji Rock in 2017 (where he also played on the White Stage), the album “Migration” had just come out and the whole set was centered around the album. With his band and instrument in hand, the set up was quite similar to 2017; however, the key difference (aside from the fact that this is the first time he performed his new album in Japan) were the immaculate visuals that left made audience member in awe.
The set started with the band merging from smoke as the soul-stirring intro began to play. To kick off the rest of the set, Bonobo first played “Polyghost” as the crowd continued to grow and gravitate towards the White Stage. Aerial views of the sky, clouds, the woods, and even caves spread across the backdrop of the stage in a way to sucked the audience in on this journey together.
Miglis joined on stage for “Tides” and “Shadows” originally sang by Jamila Woods and Jordan Rakei, respectively. However, Miglis brought a new level of enchantment to Bonobo’s latest hits. She even performed her flute, which she has been known to do for her Florida-based band, Hundred Waters.
Green performed a mixture of solo tracks where the drums and synthesizer stayed on stage with him. From time to time, the rest of the band joined and each person’s sound melted into another, as the stage behind them did the same.
