A basic kebab will set you back JPY600, but for my money you can’t really go wrong with the grandly named Deluxe, a steal at just JPY800.

Breakfast of champions http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=3734 http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=3734#comments Sun, 28 Jul 2013 03:05:00 +0000 Elliott Samuels http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=3734 The line for the grilled pork on a stick in the Oasis is mercifully short at the moment, but anyone who’s been here before knows only to well that it won’t take long to extend past the 100-meter mark. For JPY500, you’re unlikely to find a less healthy breakfast at the festival. This family certainly wasn’t holding back at 11 a.m., with the 5-year-old going so far as to say that it was his favorite part of Fuji Rock to date.

He Had a Freakin’ Flaming Sword! http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=1306 http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=1306#comments Fri, 26 Jul 2013 06:38:54 +0000 Shawn Despres http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=1306

J and I stumbled upon a fire show while walking through Oasis after Skinny Lister’s Red Marqee pre-fest concert.  A man waved different flaming objects in front of the 100 or so spectators that stopped to watch him perform.  Everyone was impressed when he balanced a lit staff on his head.  But the highlight was definitely his flaming sword.  With the crowd cheering him on he waved the sword through the air and struck different fighting poses with it.  While the electro-pop tunes he played in the background seemed like a strange choice for musical accompaniment, the show was still very cool to see.

Patio Umbrellas Good For the Sun … or the Rain! http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=1170 http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=1170#comments Thu, 25 Jul 2013 09:49:41 +0000 Shawn Despres http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=1170 The Heineken stall in the Oasis food court has a new addition this year – patio umbrellas!  There are a handful of tables and umbrellas set up right next to concession stand.  After last year’s unprecedented sunshine, the umbrellas were likely added to give beer buyers a bit of shade while they enjoy their bevvies.  But for now, they’ll serve as a good way to keep the rain out of your drink!

Traditional Bon-Odori Dance Opens Festival http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=1151 http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=1151#comments Thu, 25 Jul 2013 09:29:31 +0000 Sean Scanlan http://fujirockexpress.net/13e/?p=1151 It was just a few minutes before the festival gates opened and Mister Wim, an artist well familiar with those who visit the Palace of Wonder (the man responsible for the stickers and the brain stall) was affixing a giant inflatable ball atop this year’s Bon-Odori stage.

Actually, he has placed four balls up there, and he promises that a few are designed to fall to the ground and be kicked around like a soccer ball.

The giant ball at the top, however, won’t descend, because it is too dangerous. That’s at least what he learned a few years ago when the giant ball was not only knocking over beers buta few people in the Oasis area.

Later this evening, a special Bon-Odori performance will take place. It’s a traditional dance of Buddhist original that honors the spirits of one’s ancestors. All across Japan, people return to their hometown to show their respect to long deceased elders, either by cleaning their graves or hosting a banquet. Chinese communities have a similar custom as it’s the start of the annual ghost month.

At Fuji Rock, the event includes women dancing in traditional dress with fans, noise makers, and later in the evening, some fireworks.
