International band Superorganism performed to a packed crowd at Fuji Rock’s White Stage on the last day of the festival. The group was ecstatic to be back after four years! And with a newly released album, Fuji Rockers had a lot to look forward to with their set!

As their name suggests, Superorganism is a large group with five members: Orono Noguchi, Harry, Tucan, B and Soul. Each member takes on a number of different roles depending on the song and performance. To complete the biological theme, Superorganism’s backdrops followed nature themes with videos of things like water droplets, space, and foliage.

Superorganism’s music is conducive to a good time. The classic verse/chorus structure is easy to follow and the repeated lines throughout each chorus can be picked up even by first time listeners. Their sound is largely psychedelic pop with some indie and electronica influences. The electronica side of their sound was very evident in their opening number World Wide Pop. A filter was put on Noguchi’s vocals to make it sound like her voice was heavily autotuned. Mixed with Noguchi’s style of speak-singing, their songs have a certain feeling of ease to them.

What made Superorganism’s concert super memorable was their closing performance of Something For Your M.I.N.D. With a little bit of extra time in the set, Noguchi called members of the audience and crew to join the band on stage to dance and sing with them. She began by calling up particularly enthusiastic audience members, then calling up people with Superorganism’s merch while making a joke that merch sales would suddenly go up. Finally she looked for a harmonica player in the audience with little success. We didn’t hear a harmonica part in the final song so it may well be that it was irrelevant, but we will never know.

An incredibly personal performance, Superorganism made their audience want to see them again and again.
