Rookie a Go-Go’s underrated stars!
The only thing that makes xiexie a “rookie” band is the fact that it was formed as recently as 2020. Only being two years old, xiexie already has an incredibly well-developed sound and a camaraderie between the group members that feels like that of old friends.
The band is largely described as psychedelic alternative, but their set started out with more of an alternative/indie sound. It’s the kind of music you want playing in your speakers when you’re driving around on a summer day with the windows down. Bassist Kaifuki was especially entertaining to watch as he really got into the music and grooved! The band’s cool music vibe showed through the band members’ choice of clothes like the lead singer’s fashionable outfit and the lead guitarist’s shades.
As their set progressed, the vibes of their music changed as well. Towards the end of the set, they had more of their trademark psychedelic sounds and even ended on a beach rock vibe which had an impressive breakdown that showed off their drummer well. They deliberately picked their set order for the best flow and it paid off. All of the songs went together cohesively in the most satisfying way.
They made the most of their thirty minute set by jumping straight from each song into the next. There were no moments of silence in the set which did a great job of keeping the performance’s consistency. It’s something not a lot of artists have been doing at Fuji Rock, but it really adds to the experience!
You can tell how much the band has already improved in the short time they’ve been active. Compared to their studio recorded music just from last year, the live versions of the same songs had a much richer sound to them! Lead singer Meari’s voice was also very impressive. Her mixed belts were well supported with good pitch even on sustained phrases.
xiexie has new music coming out this summer that is sure to be fantastic! Let’s hope we can see them again at Fuji Rock with a longer set next year!
