It felt like a wild raucous backyard party when crazy cut-and-paste pop crew PAS TASTA hit the Daydreaming stage Saturday. The six piece collective of “sound geeks” were in a constant friendly battle for control of the decks, adding an elevated level of chaos to their already scatterbrained brand of chopped up pop music. PAS TASTA’s sound plays like dance music for those suffering from ADD, with sliced and diced remnants of recognizable songs zig-zagging in and out of the mix and lasting only a few fleeting moments before the next catchy rhythm elbows its way in to the spotlight.

Snippets of reggaeton, J-pop, Brazilian tropicalia and glitched out hardcore EDM were sandwiched between radio bumpers, Dukes of Hazzard musical car horns and cartoonish sound effects. If there were shredded bars of a vaguely recognizable pop tune buried in the mix, you’d give your Shazam app a headache trying to identify what it was before you were whisked away onto the next adventurous soundscape. A wonky and bass-heavy remix of the Beatles “Come Together” flip-flopped into a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it tweak of Cali Swag District’s “Teach Me How to Dougie”.

The crowd on-hand were shouting in joy when a song they recognized popped up, only to be pulled in a completely different direction moments later. In anyone else’s hands, you’d have a swirling vortex of unlistenable noise, but PAS TASTA have perfectly crafted it into danceable art. If I ever throw a wild house party, I’m putting PAS TASTA in charge.
