Illustrating his eclectic musical influences, his walkout music is from Biz Markie, employing everyone to get their hands in the air. Swims is clad in cut off jeans, a Fuji Rock t-shirt that has been relieved of sleeves, and a knee high pair of socks. Yes, he’s so dang confident that is gonna pull off this show in his socks, and a pair of rose colored sun glasses too.

His first song is “Goodbye’s Been Good to You” a lament to a lost lover with all of the heartache, emotion, and punch that one could muster from a man that is as big as an American football players. Swims sings with emotion and power, and it’s obvious that he is in love with Japan on his first visit.

His crowd banter is twinged with a southern accent, saying “Fuji Rock what is up y’all,” and later “I love ya, I love ya, I love ya.” Constant touring this year has put Swims at many outdoor festivals where a combination of heat, alcohol, and big crowds, have caused trouble in the audience and he wants everyone to “stay hydrated,” and nobody pass out or get in any fights.”

Swims is lovable on stage, as he goes through his love lorn hits like “What more can I say,” and “911” and “Hammer to the Heart.” He saves his best for his mama, performing the Shania Twain cover “You’re Still the One.” Looking a little closely at his face at the conclusion of the song, a small tar seems to form and he’s truly looking forward to getting home to see his mother in a few days.

Later, Swim rumbles through a number called “Apple Juice” which is dedicated to drinking, and “The Door,” and “Bed on Fire” and his bonafide hit, “Lose Control.”

With some solid songs to his credit and broad appeal across many different demographics, Swims is sure to be back in Japan very soon.

開演2分前になるとDJ Koolの“Let Me Clear My Throat”が大音量で鳴り響き、問答無用に座っていたオーディエンスを立ち上がらせウォームアップを促す。心臓音のようなビートが打ち込まれると、2ギター、ドラム、ベース兼シンセサイザー、キーボードの計5名のメンバーが現れ、それぞれの楽器がある定位置に収まった。バンドが一斉にハードロッキンな音をかき鳴らすと、テディがグラサンにテンガロンハット、ルーズなフジロックTをタンクトップに仕立て、ラフな短パンジーンズという実にアメリカンな出で立ちで登場。足元は靴なしの白ソックス姿で何とも愛らしいのだ。髭面にスキンヘッドで頭にタトゥを入れてる様はランシドのティム・アームストロングに見えなくもない。

初っ端の“Goodbye’s Been Good to You”から、目を見開きソウルが込められた豪快な歌声を披露する。バックで支えるバンドのアンサンブルが絶妙だ。テディの歌を邪魔せず引き立てるとともに、個々の巧みさが光る演奏。完璧な出だしで一気にフロアに熱を送り込んだ。

“Broke”でブルージーなグルーヴが繰り広げられる中、ファンがステージ向かって広げていたお手製の旗を投げ入れさせ、サイン。サインしている間は何事もないかのように歌を一切止めず、かつ乱れさせることもなかった。テディのファンに対する優しさとともに、シンガーとしての矜持を感じた瞬間だ。

初めての来日に感謝を伝え、「I love you!」と連呼。更には今ここにいる自分の隣や周りにいる人たちを大切に、互いに優しくしろよと投げかける。集ったオーディエンスに対するテディの愛がダイレクトに伝わってきて目頭が熱くなった。“911”では自ら手をウェーブさせ、ハンドクラップする。この所作があまりに自然で、フロアに一体感を醸成していく。

大人の渋さが漂う“Devil in Dress”から“Funeral”の流れで超絶ドラムソロに繋ぎ「世界一のバンドだって言っただろ」とバックバンドを称えるのだ。曲間でタオルをバンドメンバーを仕草したりしてふざけ合う様子からテディとバンドの関係がいかに素晴らしいものかが伺える。母に贈る曲とシャニア・トウェインの“You’re Still the One”をカバー。この人の表現の根底には愛しかないのかもしれない。

終盤にはキーボードがあのひたすらに美しいフレーズを感動的に奏で、バンドが順にソロを繰り広げていく。“Lose Control”が投下された。生で堪能するテディの歌声はやはり最高。締めの“The Door”まで、圧巻の歌声はもちろんのこと、その暖かくも愉快な人間性、テディ・スウィムズというアーティストの世界観に終始魅了されっぱなしだった。
