The midnight rain at Naeba had barely slicked the mud before TĀL FRY turned Fuji Rock’s most chaotic outpost into a sweat-soaked, rhythm-fueled revival.

Taking the stage inside the Crystal Palace Tent at the Palace of Wonder on Sunday night, the Delhi-based percussion heavyweights delivered a masterclass in cross-cultural adrenaline. The ensemble didn’t just hold the line with traditional ragas but brought new life to them with a distinct, rhythm-first philosophy. It was not just a traditional, hour-long classical sitar recitals, but a rhythm based exploration of traditional music.

TĀL FRY transformed ancient Indian classical structures into a primal dance party that was easily one of the festival’s most thrilling moments at the Palace of Wonder.The scene was like an after party in Tangiers or Marrakech, highlighting the retro carnivalesque madness of the Crystal Palace. Admittedly, it is a tough room to command but the time of night and fatigue of many partygoers made it the perfect music for sitting down and zoning out.

TĀL FRY made it work by ditching any stiff recital etiquettes. Instead, they tapped directly into the physical, hypnotic heartbeat of the crowd. There were many rhythm duels though the sonic spine of the set belonged to a blistering, lightning-fast dialogue between the tabla and ghatam.

The percussionists traded increasingly complex, polyrhythmic salvos that felt less like a traditional performance and more like a high-stakes, telepathic jam session.The call-and-response worked with vocalist Aadarsh Nair acting as the ultimate master of ceremonies.

What made the set unforgettable was how seamlessly the band bridged the gap between heritage and a modern club environment. They took classical Indian syllables, dropped them into driving, tribal dance signatures, and created a hypnotic loop that kept the tent moving. It was not GLASS BEAMS, but it was something ambitious and maybe a psychic recharge after three days of festival fatigue.

They proved that hand drumming and ancient instruments made from wood, clay, skin, can make an unbreakable groove.
