QUATTRO

Quattro, Cinco, Seis

The night before the performance of the young Japanese band Quattro who opened the Red Marquee today,  I was approached by the manager of the group. He was hustling for the band and I was interested, and in his hands he had a stack of flyers to hand out to the assembled audience.

I asked him to describe the band and he called them a “dance music band” which is quite the popular genre these days encompassing everything from other popular young acts like Mop of Head to Kula Shaker. I was intrigued, but didn’t know what to think.

From reading the band bio, I learned they are a 4 member group originally formed in 2005 as a college band. Their music is inspired by what they like to listen to which ranges between  country, blues, and pop-rock music.

The band have released long play records including Square the Circle (2008) and “Where is the coconut? …Ha?” released in April 2010. The band have also been hyped by MTV Japan and have the youthful energy to break out. On stage, their music veers from young anthems to Brit psychedelic rock with frontman Takeshi Iwamoto dropping his guitar and shaking his hips to the music. The band veer through musical styles a little too quickly but when they find their feet, they can generate terrific music. Definitely look out for them in the future.
