The Sea and Cake have been around for a long time and without the intention of sounding critical I was a big fan of their first 3 albums, which were quite heavy and featured some very cool instrumental tunes, but after that when the albums became pop orientated, I kind of lost interest. The band is made up of 4 of the primary people who created the “Chicago” post rock sound with John McEntire on Drums, Sam Prekop on vocals and guitar, Archer Prewitt strumming the other guitar and Eric Claridge making magic with his bass. McEntire is also a member of Tortoise, the band which pretty much invented the genre almost 20 years ago. All this experience and their vast output in other units all comes though in the professionalism and precision with which they play. Today’s set was simply awesome and the band seemed to be returning to their instrumental roots starting off their set with 2 tracks without any vocals at all. They kept on intensifying things as the set progressed and it was very cathartic to hear the primal grooves that Claridge and McEntire cooked up.
