The majority of eyes were pinned on Saori Kanda during this pre-noon performance. She started the show in a prayer-like position, as if she was letting her muses flow over her. Then, she got up and walked over to a blank white canvas and began painting for the duration of Polar Chalors’ show. It was an eye-grabbing display, watching Kanda move around like she were possessed, all while drawing out shapes using her hands.
But Polar Chalors put on a heck of a spectacle too. The duo are one half DJ, one half instrumentation, with the latter busting out flutes and saxophones to accompany his partner’s tunes. The electronic side of the equation veered from conventional dance beats to more cacophonous creations that at times came off as intentionally aggressive. The instruments, meanwhile, would be played over whatever was playing, with mixed results. Sometimes a flute would transform a beat into something close to a lullaby. Other times, the addition of a saxophone made the music even more intimidating. Not everything worked…sometimes, the two sides just clashed…but when sounds clicked, Polar Chalors created some fascinating jazz-inspired dance music.
