Koichi Hanafusa, head of Fujirockers.org, will play a DJ set of old Japanese 45s from the 60s and 70s tonight at Jim’s Vinylnasium from 9 to 10pm. The Vinylnasium is a small stage set up in the World Food Court just next to Queen Sheba. Koichi is carrying the 45s around in a water-tight metal case, as there are plenty of rare gems and forgotten classics. Meiko Kuji’s “Urami Bushi” was picked by Quentin Tarrantino for Kill Bill. There is a Japanese version of “Yellow Submarine” by Akiko Kanazawa, “Yellow Submarine Hondo.” There is a 1980 reggae version of enka by a band called What’s Love, and the retro-pop classic “Arashi-o Yobu Hotoko” by the crooner Yujiro Ishihara, who also happens to be the younger brother of Shintaro Ishihara. But even if you don’t get all the connotations, you will get the music.
