EDDIE ROBERTS’ WEST COAST SOUNDS

There is a reason why I thought this band sounded a lot like the New Mastersounds, and that is that Welsh guitarist Eddie Roberts was the founder of that well known funk unit. He certainly knew how to turn up the groove level with those guitar strings of his and he chose a very solid support lineup to match his skills. The other standout of the band would have to have been Wil Blades on the Hammond B3 organ. Wil really lived up to his surname, cutting through what seemed like all the keys in front of him to add spice to the shiny horn team made up of a tenor sax and trumpet. Eddie took full advantage of the opportunity to do something different to all the Mastersounds stuff and although everything he played was still funky, he wove in bossa nova, splintered dub reggae and afrobeat into the mix. Many of the tunes seemed very derivative however, with one song sounding like the guitar riff had been lifted straight from a Meters number. he even made a joke about stealing someone else’s melody. Full praise is due for the performance on a whole which was as energizing as it was engaging.
