Punters packed the Red Marquee a little after noon to watch LAMA. Which isn’t really that surprising – this is a Japanese rock supergroup, featuring Koji Nakamura and Miki Furukawa of synth-pop outfit Supercar, along with Hisako Tabuchi (jittery rockers Number Girl and Bloodthirsty Butchers) and Kensuke Ushio (agraph). Those are some very famous names in J-Rock, so naturally, a large crowd followed. LAMA didn’t disappoint. The quartet played slowly unfolding rock built on droney guitar playing and dance beats (LAMA features no classical drummer). At times it could feel a touch aimless…until the band darted into a big hook, featuring dramatic vocals. It was the little electronic flourishes added to nearly every song, though, that made LAMA’s tracks sound even more intriguing. LAMA earned that big crowd.
