For those of you reading this who don’t live in Japan, or haven’t for long, one thing you should know about the intriguing people of this land is that they are unswervingly proud and focussed on the fact that their country has four seasons. Food, clothing, festivals and other traditional events are all carefully synchronized with temporal movements, usually associated with the seasons, but on a more detailed level with every change that comes with the passing of time. Most likely not a conscious decision by the booking staff at Fuji Rock, but the heavy 70′s influenced rock sounds of British band Gentleman’s Pistols came with impeccable timing as the rain stopped and a beautiful evening sky unfolded over Naeba. Anyone who needed a burst of energy after trudging through the mud were sure to get it through a dose of Led Zepplin riffs and Black Keys style Southern American drawl vocals. The stage was tiny but these guys had a big sound which pounded you with heavy bass and enough guitar solos to please Jimmy Page. These metal boys really looked the part with the long hair and flamboyant clothes but I couldn’t help but noticing the just how hard vocalist James Atkinson tried to sound American, even though the band is from Leeds in the U.K.
