“I’m so nervous right now!” Priscilla Ahn said early into her set, before laughing and adding a playful “gahhhhh!” There were moments during her morning Red Marquee set where she let her nerves get the best of her – she made a few mistakes, having to restart one song entirely – but the majority of Ahn’s songs went off without a hitch. Bolstered by a supportive crowd, she played a strong set mixing acoustic folk with electronic edges, one that seemed appropriate for the early morning until a digi-detail struck and shook you.
Most of the tracks played during Ahn’s set featured heavy contributions from her backing three-piece band, who added in bass, drums and synthesizer when needed. When everyone in Ahn’s crew played, her songs were upbeat folk-tinged pop numbers sometimes jolted by moments of noise. One trick played a few times was a song appearing to be a bouncy bit of music, before a synth note set just a bit harsher than expected entered the frame. Still, even with moments like that, Ahn’s voice was consistently lovely, a Taylor-Swift-esque cadence. She did pick up an acoustic guitar and take the spotlight solo for “In A Tree,” a lovely number that swells near the end but is mostly just Ahn singing alongside some strums. She also played to the crowd, performing two numbers in Japanese, including a cover of “Country Roads.” This duo of tracks had the morning crowd clapping and hopping around, 100 percent behind her. She really had nothing to worry about from the start.
