Just as the weather broke, we were at Gypsy Avalon to check out Hiroshi Fujiwara’s set and the emcee said that tomorrow would be a “beautiful day.” We’ll believe it when we see it, but that seems to be the m.o. at Gypsy Avalon. The emcee also talked about how the power for the sound system was fueled by “tempura abura,” or used vegetable oil. Very ecological, and mellow, which describes Fujiwara’s music to a T. Famous as a J-pop producer, Fujiwara is every bit the professional. His own songs favor the kind of major 7th and 6th chords that populate what someone once called “limp dick jazz,” or LA.-derived pop music that utilizes bossa nova patterns. Actually, we sort of dig LD jazz and Fujiwara’s version wasn’t bad. However, his version of “Under the Boardwalk” was a little too limp–I mean, it’s a song about having sex “with your baby,” and Fujiwara’s version was as sexy as an issue of the National Review. -Phil
