Electro bangers
Electro bangers were Jack Beats’ musical core before it became the lingua franca of dance music, but now it is everywhere, and while I enjoyed this set and saw a lot of kids having fun and energetically dancing to it, it was hard to say it was very unique. Many of the tunes they were playing were tunes you could hear anywhere, like “The Harlem Shuffle” or the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s electro dance hit “Heads are Gonna Roll”, to name just a couple. The British duo of DJ Plus One and Beni G must find themselves in an interesting predicament. Three or four years ago, I heard other international DJs talking about Jack Beats almost as a genre unto itself. Now “electro” hyphens with everything, most notably “hip hop” and “house”, which between them cover virtually all big-room club music. They are of course very good at it. But this was little more than a set of crowd-pleasers strung one after the other. As a listener or party-goer, it was a bit difficult to fathom their identity. But then again, if this is the music that gets you going, they definitely did the job.
