Damn she's cute!
Maya Jane Coles definitely has her own flavor of house music. It is a bit minimal and has an ear for musicianship. You can almost imagine her working on the piano parts, or bringing in the other musical lines. The bass, treble and mid-range seem to keep a clear separation. It is a lucid music, never muddy, and if it feels delicate, it is also dancey. Maybe you could say it is like SBTRKT but with a more female sensibility. Or maybe you could say it is like lounge or chill-out but brought back to the big dance floor. The 25-year-old Coles is half-Japanese and has made regular appearances in Japan over the last couple years, though she still calls London home and was born and raised there. Her career is also much more firmly rooted back in the UK — she has two BBC Essential Mixes to her credit along with the rest of a long and growing resume. Tonight however was her Fuji Rock debut. And for that, she very much kept to form, extending an invitation to the crowd to come onto her wavelength and just enjoy the ride.
