THE TAKOSAN

It is very lucky that we have such great photographers at fujirockexpress because these photos of The Takosan do far more justice to what their performance was like than any words will ever be able to. Just look at that moustache on singer Yasuhiro Andou, and feast your eyes on his assistant in the sparkling suit and sock on his head. It is no surprise that this soul / funk unit hails from Osaka, a city which is known throughout Japan for its zany people and abundance of comedians. This live show was just as much about making people laugh as it was about making them dance, even though the crowd seemed to be doing both in equal measure. Hopefully the memory of James Brown will live on through the frequent use of his vocal style, dance moves and music that is used very frequently by Japanese funk bands. The Takosan at times sounded like a James Brown cover band. Just like the godfather of soul Yasuhiro wore and eventually took off a long, flowing cape which was then brought back to him by his whacky sidekick with the strange headgear. In terms of lyrics, the crowd didn’t seem to care what he was singing about and he used the words “New York” as the driving force behind a crazed tune to finish the set.
