KITTY,DAISY & LEWIS

A family that plays together stays together

I had heard about KD&L’s famed sets from the last time they played Fuji Rock and even the last time they were in Japan earlier in the year. So I was hyped to see this family band including Mama, Papa and faux great uncle, trumpeter Eddie “Tan Tan” Thorton. They played quite well and had the crowd going wild, but perhaps the bar had been set impossibly high by following the manic ball of energy that was the Räfven. Something seemed like the energy level could have been pushed that tiny bit further.

Nitpick as I may, it was still a smashing set which I enjoyed every minute of. They played a set consisting of mainly tunes from their new album, The Third. A cool thing about the band is that the three siblings are pretty interchangeable on instruments and switch throughout the set. Standout tunes included, “No Action” , “Baby Bye Bye”, “It Ain’t Your Business” and a special version of “Feeling of Wonder” dedicated to the Palace of Wonder stage they were playing.

I thoroughly enjoy their newest album the most of their releases thus far, so I was happy to hear the bulk of the tunes from the album. It also features Thorton on trumpet extensively, which is always a treat in the live setting. They kept him around almost the whole set. He often jumped on the mic to get the crowd going, something I thought the rest of the band should have done a tad more.

Kitty, Daisy and Lewis played earlier in the day in a set I didn’t get to see, so who’s to say which set I would have preferred. What I do know is that I was left with a strong desire to see them play again. For myself and others in Japan, we are in luck as they return early October to play Osaka and Tokyo.
