SABANNAMAN
Rock Rap Funk Youngsters
Sabannaman hit the stage with full force, breaking into a rapid fire of rap rock-meets-funk, combined with a killer guitar solo. It was a great opening to this year’s Rookie A Go-Go stage; and an excellent follow-up to the epic Foo Fighters performance that had finished just minutes earlier. While their sound has some similarities to a younger Beastie Boys, these guys have a distinctive sound of their own; and make full use of it.
The funky foursome have been around only 3 yearsーand look young enough for that to be a large portion of their lives so far. They played songs from their first full-length album Magic Mutant, released last monthーhighlights being the funky rock rap “Freak Out”, as well as the more 70s guitar wakka wakka-style “Good Vibration”, and the absolute best song of the night… “Gnus on the Parade”. Now that, my friends, is a song title that begs looking into. Do it. You won’t regret it. It was a fantastic track that many hardcore, melocore and punk fans could get into. It had the mix of bridges and choruses that allowed for the magic three: headbanging, two-stepping and a circle pit. Don’t know what I’m on about? Check out the track here.
Their last song was a more poppy, melodic song which although I thought was a weak finish, until I found myself humming it all the way home.
