HUDSON MOHAWKE

Hudson Mohawke rarely gets shuffled under the EDM umbrella, but his set at the White Stage on Fuji Rock 2015’s Sunday night sure boasted a few hallmarks of the style. The stage, for one, played a huge role in the show, a dizzying Skittles-bag worth of lights playing out in time with the Glasgow artist’s music. And the songs themselves tended to play out in a familiar fashion — building up to a big moment of release, designed to get a crowd going.

Twist is, Hudson Mohawke mostly did not bring to mind the sounds of EDM fests, despite following a similar formula. The extra performers he brought along — including a drummer — added a welcome oooomph to the show, while the producer (real name Ross Birchard) makes music that is a bit knottier than your typical big-tent fare. He certainly got aggressive, especially when he rolled out material from his project with Canadian producer Lunice TNGHT (“Higher Ground,” “Goooo”). Yet he also worked in more varied numbers, primarily from his recently released album Lantern, ranging from the soul-sampling “Ryderz” to the twinkle-gone-trap “Chimes.” It was a good balance of bangers and more easy-going material, concluding with the gorgeous “Scud Books” off that new full-length, a sweet electro number that closed the night out on a triumphant note. He might bear a few similarities with EDM producers, but Hudson Mohawke deliverd a vibe all his own.
