DJ/Sakata Kayo

The Pyramid Garden stage is a hike away from the main festival, the stage nestled among campsites full of tents. But the hike is a rewarding one, with the relaxed area with reclining chairs, a campfire and children’s playground waiting at the end. Also awaiting me was DJ Kayo Sakata’s set. Inititally confused by the empty stage, I found that the DJs have been set up in a small wooden pyramid hut overlooking the area. With that, I settled down to listen to the set.

Mixing a wide selection of cuts (with everything from rock and roll to world music) the music never settles on one sound but continues to surprise with new sounds. Use of world music percussion is prominent with hints of reggae showing through and tasteful use of brass for choruses. The beats are not too loud, as suits the laid-back nature of the area (and the fact some people are probably still waking up in the tents not 20 meters from the stage) but refreshingly don’t fall into the trap of ‘duff duff’ beats. The set continues for some time, but I take my leave, with the strains of music following me through my hike back to the main grounds.
