Math rock makes your brain hurt
The first thing I noticed was that this was probably the loudest band I watched all day, including bands on much bigger stages. They had the volume cranked all the way up to ear-splitting, and they seemed to like it there.
The Taupe are a noisy math rock 4-piece who mostly play around the live house scenes in Shinjuku and Shimokitazawa. It’s three guys — two guitarists and a drummer — with a girl bass player in a red dress at the front. They all jerked their bodies admirably during the freakouts, which were pretty much just regular song sections. So instead of verse-chorus-verse, it was riff A-freakout–riff B–freakout–vocal drums syncopation part–freakout and so on.
A lot of the time, the music was so complicated and noisy it was hard to follow. But every once in a while they played something that sounded like a song and it was actually pretty good. Seems they have good potential, and shouldn’t be afraid to write songs that don’t make both your brain and your ears hurt at the same time.
