Yes, he can also play straight techno

When performing as a DJ, Boredoms founder and frontman Yamataka Eye has pretty much two speeds, “weird” and “techno”. Tonight, it was techno, and actually this is more normal for him when playing under his own name. He has produced tons of music that could be described as eclectic, noise, abstract, improvisational or futuristic, one of the more consistent features being rhythmical screaming and a weird combination of music and non-music. But those kinds of sounds usually come from all kinds of diverse projects under different names. Tonight there was only a touch of that at the intro, then it was just beats. When I walked in, he was playing a disco track that sounded for all the world like it had lifted the beat from Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”. That was about as flippy as he got, returning back into hard steady beats, livened up by vocal and instrumental samples. As weird as Eye is, he wasn’t totally oblivious to the fact that this was a closing party for the 20th edition of the Fuji Rock Festival. So he played music that let the crowd enjoy it.
