South Penguin
Laid back indie-pop for the night set
Maybe it was fatigue setting in after three days of Fuji Rock-in’, or maybe you can only have so much energy come 2 am on Sunday, but Rookie A Go Go participant South Penguin’s set breezed by. Which was probably intentional — the quartet craft a guitar-guided indie-pop best described as laid back, hinting at something tropical, or at least adjacent to a sun-soaked beach. Everything unfolds at mid-tempo, while the vocals drift over the interlocking guitar in a way that makes them feel like a relaxed sigh rather than anything urgent. A lot of bands like this have popped up in recent years — including some that have also played at Rookie A Go Go, such as Cero and Mitsume, although both of those evolved into something different shortly after. It was a decent first step for South Penguin, and a nice backdrop, but ultimately it left me wondering what would come next for them.
