D.A.N
Have a little thump with chill vibes
Zoning out felt like a consistent theme throughout the first day of Fuji Rock. Easy-breezy bands such as Lucky Tapes, Suchmos and The Internet played soulful sets that were ideal for sitting down and just soaking in. Japanese band D.A.N closed out a day of chill vibes at the Red Marquee a whisker before midnight, the group’s music featuring the same tight bass playing and jazz-marinated keyboard melodies as the aforementioned outfit. But maybe because they played in the shadows, or maybe just because their drummer puts a little extra oomph into every strike, D.A.N’s set managed to be both hypnotic and soothing at the same time. Synthesized steel drums popped up on almost every song, lending cuts such as “Ghana” a nice tropical gust, while they upped the energy on numbers such as “Native Dancer,” turning what are on recording relatively mid-tempo numbers into something more thumping. As the night programming was set to get underway and get people out of a relaxed mode, D.A.N served as a solid bridge between relaxed and energetic.
