KILL THE NOISE

LIVE REPORT

Knuckleheaded EDM done right

Kill The Noise’s set was as knuckleheaded a show as you’ll see at Fuji Rock, but every stupid idea embraced fully to the point that there was something pretty amazing about its idiocy. The New York artist brings next to no subtlety to EDM, and bless him for that — one hard-hitting slice of electro-pop was titled “I Do Coke,” and even though it certainly has a tongue-in-cheek side, it also probably sounds ideal while on coke. His set at the Red Marquee was a constant barrage of bass freakouts, dolphin squeaks and internet memes. The crowd ate it all up, many thrusting lightsabers of various colors into the air along to the pressurized hi-hat hits. Like all good EDM, Kill The Noise rejected genre lines, letting Jamaican dancehall bleed into remixes of contemporary hip-hop cuts before dropping a just-barely remixed version of Linkin Park’s “One Step Closer.” It was immediate and fast pleasure, and just the sort of performance to get a night of dancing going.
