COURTNEY BARNETT

LIVE REPORT

Escaping into Music

Easily the most anticipated set at the Red Maquee and the space opened up quickly when indie rock sensation, Courtney Barnett and her trio took the stage. It seems she has never left the stage this year with non-stop touring due to some heavy promotion and the dream of discovering the next big female indie star.

To be honest, this role doesnt really suit her. The witticism in her lyrics and the directness of her songs is a little lost on stage, though that doesn’t mean doesn’t put everything into her performance, she just shies behind loud guitar riffs and the well crafted stance of so many grunge stars that went ahead of her.

Still, the audience was mostly packed with her fans who bounced around to tunes like “Dead Fox” and “Debbie Downer” and especially “Avant Gardener”. It was a good way to set up the afternoon, listening to near hour of an up and coming artist who is showing us the future in an age when music has gone through such a transition.

A true product of Australia, Barnett sings the blues of having too many cafes in her community, and wanting to escape somewhere, perhaps into her music when people can leave her alone. Take some time Courtney, and we’ll definitely see you when your ready to come around again.
