LÅPSLEY

LIVE REPORT

For 19-year-old British singer/songwriter Lapsley, the strength of her abilities lies in using her soaring voice to navigate the mazes of sparse synth and drum machine laid around her. That powerful voice, drawing some comparisons to the talents of artists like Adele or Feist, took center stage but never obscured the equally beautiful layered electronic R&B production backing it.

Her mid-day performance on the Red Marquee mirrored the very sound that her fans have come to love on her recent studio debut album, “Long Way Home”. It was no surprise then, when her set focused on highlighting more than a few of the lush, moving tracks from this debut, including “Operator (He Doesn’t Call Me)” and “Painter (Valentine)”. Elegant in all-black, she said to Fujirock fans early in the set, “I’ve fallen in love with this country. Please invite me back”. After hearing the rich melodies and powerhouse vocals of her live performance, I don’t imagine they’ll have any problems obliging.
