NON STOP PUNK

LIVE REPORT

Very little was written about this band prior to the last minute announcement that they would be performing at a festival opener on Thursday evening. Google searches revealed nothing as the audiece was pretty much left guessing about what to expect.

In hindsight, we should’ve known better. With 40 years of punk retrospectives filling UK museums we should’ve expected an all-star roster of who’s who in the Japan rock scene to put on an hour-long romp through punk classics.

It started with The Roosters who contributed the majority of the band: guitar, bass, and drum, and they contributed the Clash classic ” Should I Stay or Should I Go”. Next, the frontman for the Sherberts came up to lead the song “Brand New Caddillac”.

The band were playing to the faithful with copius fist pumping and pogo dancing. But while we thought it couldn’t get any better, Cro-Magnons front man came out stumbling and gyrating as the band ripped through the Stooges classic “I Wanna Be Your Dog”. The only thing better could be “Double Dog” where to this day, no one but Iggy would has the balls to play the same song twice during a set.

And then we were feted with Johnathan Richman and the Modern Lovers classic “Roadrunner” which was sung in Japanese. And by this time many were guessing the final number? Sex Pistols? More Clash?

How could we ever forget the Ramones, and sure enough Non Stop Punk ended with “Blitzkrieg Bop”. RIP Joey Ramone and everyone else who came before.
