Tokyo based and Southern California raised singer-songwriter, Michael Kaneko, takes the stage at the Red Marquee along with his bassist, keyboardist, and drummer. It was a sunny Friday morning, a vibrant kick-off to this weekend of events.

“Hello Fuji Rock!” he exclaimed, as began his set in English, proving himself to be the true definition of an international artist. In 2017, Michael performed at the Gypsy Avalon stage, mentioning that he is thankful to be back and this time at the Red Marquee.

By the second or third song, the audience filled the surroundings of the stage, dancing and head bopping along to the songs. “Minasan Ohayou! It’s sunny! Isn’t it great?” he says in between songs. In playful nature, Michael interacted with his audience throughout his entire set. He managed to tailor his song RECIPE to fit the Fuji Rock theme, singing: “Ohayou Naeba! Minna kampai!” At times, forgoing his guitar, he danced and sang along with the audience.

During songs we were treated to a few keyboard solos, drum solos and bass solos. Along with this lively performance came a surprise guest, salasa! He and salasa collaborated on his most recent album the Neighborhood, and the audience was treated to a live performance of their song, SHIGURE.

Michael and his band kicked off the weekend perfectly. Sunshine, dancing, and a whole lot of fun!
