Probably the worst kept secret on Saturday night was an impromptu appearance at Naeba Shokudo by Tom Rowlands, one half of the mega-selling electronic outfit, Chemical Brothers.

Rowlands was already playing with his new outfit Tomora (with Norwegian singer-songwriter Aurora), at White Stage when group messages began spreading about 11 p.m. that he would do a one-off at the minuscule stage which once served as a noodle bar, and live stage for up and coming rock bands. It would take some reconfiguring for sure, but Tom was committed to making it happen.

The crowds started gather immediately when the word went out and foot traffic was impossible, and many early-bird craned to put themselves to the edge of the tiny bar. After a few hopeful notes and sounds, it was apparent that more sand engineering would be needed, and the surprise set would need another half-hour to set up proper.

But when it went live, it was electric. Transferring all of the energy from a big stage to a little stage sent the hundreds of people swinging dancing, and waving their arms in delight. Rowlands has a deep history with Fuji Rock, performing multiple times with awe dropping visuals as Chemical Brothers, and with side projects like Tomora.

This time was different. It was just him and the controller, and a few dancers on stage. And the crowd loved it. He brought the beats, lowered the temperature, and then brought it back again and again seemingly without stop. Though not for certain, it was definitely north of 90 minutes of electronic bliss.
