7/27 SUNDAY DREAMING

NAOKI SERIZAWA

Ascending into the clouds on the Dragondola, surrounded by mist, the peak of Mt. Naeba seems mysterious. What lies at the top of the mountain?

Well, disco/funk/house from the editor of Night Out Magazine, of course.

It seemed the strangest place to hear Naoki Serizawa. His DJ set consisted of house, disco, and Brunswick-esque soul, all mixed into something modern yet classic. Here he was, in a tent on a mountain, in the drizzle, with a smallish crowd dancing around him – hippies, club girls, little kids and a few random passers-by. Yet instead of seeming incongruous, it was perfect – his music turned what could have been a reasonably dour situation into a full-on dance party. Serizawa spun songs about dancing, and wanting sugar (I think that’s a euphemism) and then dancing some more. No one minded that it was rainy, least of all Serizawa, who never stopped dancing the entire time, even if he had to do it one-handed on occasion.
