Yamataka Eye is a founding member of the Boredoms, and since the band’s heyday, he has spun off in a million directions: selling drawings and collages in art galleries, forming enormous drum circles, and musically zooming around everywhere from experimental jazz to ongoing Boredoms performances to producing and DJing glitchy cut-up dance tracks. Given his extreme ecclecticism, it was a bit of a surprise that this DJ set was so night-clubby. Eye, looking his normal straggly self with a scruffy beard and a gray t-shirt. Eye started out with a horribly abbrasive sample, a fingernails on the chalkboard kind of thing, and I was wondering how much he would test the audience. But it was only a short prelude. Once he dropped the bass, the music was very conventional and danceable, a variation on the minimal techno popular in big Tokyo nightclubs. Underpinned by four-on-the-floor beats, it was very hard and dark. All told, he only simulated jet engine noises once after that, and the effect was still fairly musical. Towards the end, there were even a few tracks with vocal parts, even some deep house. It was a solid set, if not extraordinary.
