bonobos
Sunday morning’s rain let up minutes before Bonobos’ lunchtime Field of Heaven opening set. Showcasing cuts from their sixth full-length disc, March’s “Hyper Folk,” the group drew a large crowd who happily bopped around to new tracks such as the whimsically titled “Good Morning My Unicorn” and “San Gatsu No Prism.”
Comprised of core members Chung-ho Sai on guitar and vocals, Natsuko Morimoto on bass, and Bondo Tsuji on drums, the group brought out a number of session players to help flesh out their earthy, feel-good rock songs. With a drummer and a very happy keyboardist already onstage, a pair of horn players emerged early on. Bonobos were good with five players, and even better with seven. But the act were at their best when a violinist and cellist joined everyone prior to the start of “Go Symphony!” With nine people all playing together, the soaring, upbeat track was easily one of the strongest parts of the 50-minute performance.
Bonobos were a bit like Fuji Rock itself. The more people involved, the better the party is!
