Foodie Fest: Best of British
Chicken arse or fish and chips: which is better?
Despite the common misperception amongst Japanese that “English food is disgusting” (always said with a smug grin, like eating grilled chicken arse on a stick is somehow taking things to a higher level), this year has seen a small increase in the number of restaurants in Tokyo serving British food. So, this year it was pleased to find a couple of places in the Oasis selling British food.
First up we tracked down the scone shop, which sells nice properly cups of coffee and freshly baked scones in a variety of flavours including matcha and chocolate, macadamia and chocolate, and pumpkin. Good for grabbing and then taking for a slow walk over to the Green Stage. This is a much better way to start the morning than the dude we saw eating a sad grilled fish on a stick with a pint of Heineken.
Then (queue angelic fanfare) we found the fish and chips stall in the World Food court. It’s difficult to find a decent interpretation of this British classic in Japan, and although the chips are not quite the same as those back in the UK, the fish comes in well-sealed crispy coatings of batter and is sizeable enough of a portion to keep you fuelled all day. You’ll find the food is at it’s best when it’s busy, but not slammed, so try a late lunch or an early dinner to catch them at their best and be sure to wash it all down with a pint of Punk IPA.
