LIVE REPORT WHITE STAGE 7/29 SAT

CHRONIXX

The soundtrack to your summer is here

24-year old reggae sensation Chronixx made his first appearance in Japan with the release of his first album Chronology still fresh from a few days ago. With a prolific single back catalog in Jamaica, the album pulls together his diverse reggae style, and the one-hour set at the White Stage warmed up a chilled and damp Saturday-afternoon crowd.

Opening track “Alpha and Omega” had a disco-dub vibe, heavy on the echo and bluesy rock guitar. “They Don’t Know” was a sun-drenched sing-a-long number that delved into more romantic ideas, followed by the wonderful”Majesty”, an upbeat love song drenched in Caribbean sunshine. The feel-good tracks continued with “Smile Jamaica”, a number to which it is difficult to do anything else, and certainly placed these tracks on many a summer playlist. Chronixx’s embrace of artists like Major Lazer in party song “Blaze Up The Fyah” may dismay purists, but it spoke to the White Stage crowd who took the opportunity to enjoy a good bounce.

These numbers all demonstrate the pop sensibility behind much of the music Chronixx is making – accessible reggae that acknowledges its roots as well as taking the classic sound to places new. If nothing else, an afternoon with Chronixx helped everyone skank away the rainy day blues, and there’s nothing like reggae from an assured and consummate performer to warm your rain-drenched soul.
