LIVE REPORT RED MARQUEE 7/29 SAT

NINA KRAVIZ

Russian DJ/producer Nina Kraviz takes over from A Guy Called Gerald with barely a pause at 1.30am in the Red Marquee. The crowd are ready and waiting for her and as she drops the first beats in her set and the lights lower over the audience a huge cheer rises up as Kraviz slips in the first of many pleasing moments into her set. Kraviz is interesting in that she tends towards layering micro-tracks over each other: rather than building to a massive crescendo, a beat is built over and under – layers switching in and out and when the new bass line jumps in, or a synth line takes over – the crowd signals their approval with a roar. Given the brevity of each snippet, this means those roars are frequent. It’s smooth and silky set, effortlessly playing to a crowd primed by headliners Aphex Twin and LCD Soundsystem.
