LIVE REPORT ROOKIE A GO-GO 7/30 SUN

THE GURL

The group can’t be accused of false advertising as they do indeed feature a girl among their members. The band is old-school rock and roll, with their most distinctive feature being the frontman’s voice. He has great range, starting off with an almost female voice but ramps it up to a mean old-school rock drawl. Their best song is their fourth one that has a ska edge to its rhythm, cheerfully strolling bass line dominating through the song.

They close off their set with a passionate, leisurely love ballad, wending their way through its well-structured rise and falls. These last two songs gave a taste of their potential but the first three songs were not as memorable and did not feel as well constructed. If they can apply this type of smart songwriting to their other songs, then maybe we might see them back at Fuji Rock sometime.
