THE STRYPES
The sound and the fury
Hailing from Ireland, The Strypes hit the stage with a flying leg kick, a most rollicking, bombastic show start that I have seen. They know they got it good, and routinely punch out their most recently album opener, “Behind Closed Doors” at the start of most gigs. In fact, frontman and vocalist Ross Farrelly wore nearly the same type of patterned vest, pants and mirrored glasses which he styled for the cover of Spitting Image.
From the beginning it’s all piss and vinegar with this group as they’ve turned their instruments up and a more than willing to make the audience bear the brunt of this aural onslaught. And the band have lyrics to boot, such as the love gone bad ballad of “Black Shares Over Red Eyes”
“We just need to settle
We’re not settled for less
As we’re driving in the bottles of happiness
I said we’re all cruel creatures
But there’s proof among the preachers
That the truth will come and meet us one day”
“No lie
I’m good with muddy and a blue sky
Oh yeah, the future’s bright
Even with black shades over red eyes”
The band are well seasoned performers by now, touring heavily in support of three albums and multiple singles. The band also sway between acoustic performances and straight rock sets, and tonight they’ve definitely decided to turn up maximum ampage and bowl over the audience.
It was a great set, full of power and fury as well as a touching emotion.
