LIVE REPORT GREEN STAGE 7/30 SUN

Yuki

J-popper adds pomp to her sound

Yuki came ready for a festival Sunday afternoon. The J-pop star and former vocalist for ’90s rock outfit Judy And Mary strolled onto the Green Stage wearing a pink, puffy dress with sparkling blue and red portions, backed up by a hefty band featuring an impressive brass section. This is what a traditional festival act is all about — flashy outfits, a sound that can reach the people all the way in the back and a personality that can charm anyone over. Over the course of her set, Yuki did just that.

Her solo career has touched on all sorts of genres — she’s a J-pop chameleon of sorts — but at Naeba she embraced her rock-centric material, either giving it a big-band makeover (an opening stretch that included “Wonder Line” and “Hello!”) or picking up a guitar herself and blasting them (the back half). Well maybe not the best summation of her career, it was the sort of big-time sound that works on a biggie-sized scale. And that’s exactly what Yuki seemed to have in mind with her show Sunday.
