Tjiros (T字路s)
After Spanish horn-driven partyboyz Doctor Prats worked the pre-festival “Zenyasai” crowds into a frenzy, it seemed a quite a tough act to follow, but Tjiros (T字路s) had everyone swaying and clapping along to their nostalgic Japanese folk sound.
With Tomohito Shimoda on bass and Taeko Ito covering guitar and vocals, Tjiros are no strangers to playing at Fuji Rock, joining this time to support their new self-titled album which was released in March of this year.
This time the duo will spread their folksy sound across multiple days of the festival, playing Thursday’s opening party on the Red Marquee as well as late Saturday in the Crystal Palace tent and again Sunday afternoon at Field of Heaven.
Though the duo show great chemistry (they’ve been making music together since 2010), credit goes to the unique gruff, gravelly voice of singer and guitarist Taeko Ito, giving Tjiros stripped down folk/blues its own distict sound.
Providing tunes to soundtrack a couple recent Japanese films, they’ve gained a following of loyal fans who came to support them tonight at the Red Marquee. No doubt with this chance to play the pre-festival party, they’ve gained a fair few new fans too. Catch them again on Saturday at 25:30 at the Crystal Palace tent, and once more at Field of Heaven on Sunday at 13:20.
