ELVIN BISHOP’S BIG FUN TRIO
Old school blues rock hits the Palace
For those that love their rock & roll in its primordial blues form, the name Elvin Bishop should be familiar. He has currently partnered up with two other veterans in drummer Will Jordan and piano/bassist Bob Welsh Jr. But I’ll be honest, I had no idea how many people there were playing for the majority of the show due to the massive crowd assembled at the front and the band’s sitting position on the lowest position in the Crystal Palace stage.
The set is a slab of old fashioned blues and rock, with dazzling duels of guitar, rolling piano faithfully followed by bass and turns in the spotlight for each instrument of the trio. The guitarwork is impeccable, each riff and pluck oozing blues anguish. But the other standout was Willy Jordan’s raspy voice contrasted with his sotto alto voice, particularly in “Fooled Around in Love” and “Higher and Higher” that sees him hit amazing heights.
The end comes far too quickly, just as the audience was really starting to jive. But this was really just a taste of what’s to come. This intimate show will be expanded at the Field of Heaven on Saturday at 7pm. Be sure to be there if you love your blues.
