Tjiros
Taeko Ito is a little lady with a gigantic voice, the kind of voice that could grab all ears and hearts in a crowded barroom, even maybe without amplification. The crowd at Sunday afternoon’s Field of Heaven was left with no doubt that she can really belt it out with a Janis Joplin-like intensity, in a gruff, scratchy, three-packs-a-day voice that hearkens back to another era. The band plays an early 20th century style of swing and cabaret jazz and folk, with Ito singing and playing a Gibson guitar that looks about three sizes too big for her. The band’s other co-founder is stand-up bass player Tomohito Shimoda, from the well known ska band Cool Wise Man. The repertoire is solid, and seeing them play is almost like watching a period piece film. But the thing that really makes it is Taeko Ito’s vocals, because that little lady can really sing her heart out!
