Make Fuji Rock great again

Fuji Rock Festival 2018 was one of the more musically progressive editions of the fest yet, featuring a wide variety of genres represented and two of the three major headliners being people who rarely get the chance to sit at the top of a fest headline in Japan. But for everyone hankering for some long forgotten time, there was Western Caravan. Sunday night they played one more time, delivering their diorama-ready Western swing music to a solid crowd in front of the Naeba Shokudo. It was inoffensive country music with a pleasant enough swing, but one marred by a regressive streak creeping out of their set. At one point, lead singer Thirsty Dave shouted “let’s see you do that with a computer” at the end of a honky-tonk number. It was an icky moment of conservatism that reminded some artists want to define just what music is (while ignoring all of the loaded connotations such a statement carries, connected to both race and class), and stuck out like a ten-gallon MAGA hat at a gathering that was among one of Fuji Rock’s most progressive.
