Salam Unagami is a special DJ, and perhaps the only one this weekend who didn’t use the turntables at Blue Galaxy. I will have to ask Jim West to confirm my observation, but I am guessing its true in theory.
Aside from being able to convince Jim to cover his turntables for a few hours, Salam is possibly the only one playing modern Middle Eastern and India music. He regularly travels to these areas and seeks out the latest beats and rhythms. It’s an interest that few people have though Salam is quite committed to this endeavor as hosts an “Oriental Music Show” which traverses different languages including English, French and Hindi. Salam’s other interests include cooking and cuisine.
These interests were on display tonight as Salam sliced and diced his way through a longish set by Blue Galaxy standards, running on a full hour though most only get a half hour to 45 minute set. Salam used his computer to mix the beats and rhythms, magically melding different sounds that are rarely heard outside of the Middle East. His commitment to such music is admirable as few othersare able to be fluent in this exotic and underappreciated music.
