Getting there is half the fun
The annual pilgrimage to the hills of Naeba has begun. Fujirockers.org packed a chartered bus from downtown Shinjuku to make the 3-hour trek up northwest, and hopefully out of the path of an imminent typhoon forming in the Pacific ocean.
Many had been warned about the potential for wet weather, though our long-time staff writer, James Mallion, is still committed to pitching his two-man tent. He’s hoping his tried and tested spot from last year will provide the proper drainage.
Pulling into the Kamisato Rest Stop, the first thing we spotted were two Smash buses escorting artists and technical staff to the festival. Over the course of the next few days, these drivers will be making this trip many, many times.
After seeing the buses, our interest picqued: who would be waiting in line for ramen? Who would be filling up on non-alcoholic drinks? Veteran writer, Dave Frazier, made the instant connection, chatting with the 6-person team outfitted in black near the check-out counter piled with omiyage.
“Man, I am just looking for something sweet, some Mentos or something,” said one of the members of N.E.R.D, who headline the Green Stage tomorrow. After a quick chat, the group made their way to the parking lot and boarded the bus for the remaining 2 hour ride to Neaba.
For the rest of us, there was still ten minutes to finish our ramen or delicious curry pork. We also looked forward to tonight’s show and the as-of-yet “unannounced” artists to play the opening party
