Prepare to take in a mini-lecture about how to drink this libation

One of the simpler thrills of arriving at a new edition of the Fuji Rock Festival is observing the changes to the food landscape of the event. What stalls are out, what new delicacies are available for purchase, which places have the longest lines — simple stuff, but titillating for those who return to Naeba on a yearly basis.

An early highlight comes courtesy of whisky brand Johnnie Walker, who have set up the delightfully named Johnnie Highball stand in the food court near the Red Marquee. They sell two drinks, a traditional highball and the far more intriguingly named “Fuji Rock Style” highball. What constitutes a Fuji Rock Style highball? Well, the plastic cup gets lined with salt, sugar and kinoko powder, and a helpful server explains that you need to drink this beverage in a specific way to really maximize the taste (spoiler: go clockwise). It’s a nice change of pace from beer and sake, and that kinoko and whisky combo mixes bitter with vaguely sweet to pretty solid results.
